Rice production continue to reach highs record in India

India is heading towards a near record rice production for 2020-21, according to a report from FAS (Foreign Agriculture Service) of the US department of Agriculture. As a comparison from 2016-20 rice consumption In India detail as under:-

The USDA said “low temperatures, Soil moisture and well-distributed rainfall during the development phase supported high planting and productivity prospect”.

China was the leading rice producer followed by India, Indonesia and Bangladesh in 2019-20.

India has been the largest exporter of rice over the years. Other rice exporting countries are Thailand, Vietnam and Pakistan. Countries which witnessed higher growth in exports of rice in the year 2018 are Brazil (91%), China (48%), and Pakistan (15%). India registered 4.5% increase in exports of rice.

  • ·        Rice importing countries are China, Philippines, Nigeria, Cote d’ Ivoire, Saudi Arabia etc.
  • ·        Rice imports by China have declined significantly in the last 3 years on account of abundant domestic supplies.
  • ·        Philippines is on its way in becoming the largest importer of rice following the government’s decision to allow the unimpeded importation of the staple as a way to bring down prices.

Rice consumption in 2019-20 is estimated at 102 million tonnes, an increase of 3%. Consumption is expected to increase further in 2020-21 to 108 million tonnes with the government pushing more subsidized rice.
